While it's true that it doesn't have bluetooth or wi-fi capability like the top two winners in our list of best digital meat thermometer or even multiple meat probes, it's a very solid unit that has amazing range, easy to read LCD display and a receiving unit that stays with you for up to 300 feet away with no need for a smart phone.
It's also splashproof to IP65.

When I first started smoking meat at a really serious level and documenting the process for the website, these were the ones I used. At one point I had 5 or 6 of them in a drawer and over a year or so, the probes would just stop working for no apparent reason.
I later learned that I was getting water down in the probe where the cable enters and that ingress of water was messing with the electronics.

I have used other wireless meat thermometers that are similar and most of them work pretty well considering there's a lot going on in a very small space.
The MeatStick 4X pulls ahead of the competition by placing 3 sensors in the silver portion of the probe and the ambient temperature out on the top. They also have really good range with more than 650 feet possible in certain conditions.
The MeatStick 4X goes all the way into the meat and then sends its signal to the charger box which must be within 6 feet. The charging box sends that signal to your smart phone via bluetooth/wi-fi.
The MeatStick stores in it's special charger and gives you 70+ hours of use between charges.
Another amazing feature is its ability to withstand liquid.. even hot liquid like grease. You can use this device when baking, smoking, grilling air frying, sous vide and even deep frying!

The Meater is not the best digital meat thermometer where wireless probes are concerned but it's close. This one runs head to head with its main competitor except for its range and liquid resistance which may not be an issue for some people but it was enough to make it fall just slightly behind the MeatStick 4X in my review.
The Meater has a range of 165 ft via bluetooth and it's bluetooth repeater and has 2 sensors, 1 in the tip for sensing the food temperature and one on the top end for sensing the ambient temperature of the smoker, grill or oven.
it can also send it's signal to the cloud via your home router which allows you to see the temperature from anywhere.
It is water resistant in that it can handle the dishwasher and basic getting wet but it is not intended for complete submersion in liquid of any kind.
The Meater comes in a nifty bamboo case which doubles as a charger and a bluetooth signal repeater to increase it's range.
It uses a single AAA battery for charging the stick when it's in the charger and lasts over 24 hours with each charge. 1 AAA battery will charge the probe more than 100 times.
The Meater interacts with your smart phone via its APP and gives you all of the functionality you would expect including cloud connection, alarms, notifications, estimated time until complete, etc.

I have an old school stick burner. It is made out of heavy steel. ( Gator Pit ) Will the signal be able to effectively transmitt through this material?

How about the Weber Instant read thermometer. Any good?
Dave, The Weber seems to be accurate and carries a 2 year warranty however, there’s nothing instant about it. It’s terribly slow as in about 15 seconds response time. If you’re looking for a budget instant read thermometer, you’d be better off with the the ThermoPop 2 which reads in about 2-3 seconds and is $35. You can also pick up a ThermoPro instant read pretty cheap. They are not anywhere near the quality of ThermoWorks so you do have to handle them very carefully but they will work and you can definitely save some money that way. The readings are also going to take a little longer but probably less than 6 seconds on most.
I’ve considered using the Fireboard w/the blower fan on my LSG 24×36 offset, but after researching it seemed like the consensus was that this set up would not work. I’m curious as to how this works out for you. My understanding was this set up would have the fan choking out the fire creating dirty smoke. Is that an issue for you ?
I have not had an issue with this.. the port for the fan is in the back of the firebox and I have a special adapter that allows me to attach the blower fan from Fireboard to this port.
I build my fire like normal using lit charcoal in the basket and then just enough wood chunks on top to give me the smoke that I need. I let it get up to temperature or really close with the vent in the door open and the door cracked just a little before plugging in the fan. Once it’s up to temp, the blower fan/Fireboard takes over.
When the fan is unable to bring up the temperature, I know it’s time to add a little more charcoal, maybe a half chimney every hour or whenever I notice it’s needed.
I have not had dirty smoke using this method. I do recommend trying it out with no food in the smoker for a few hours to sort of get the hang of it.
I do not use this when using only wood in the firebox, so I can’t speak to how that would work.
In my opinion, the LSG 24×36 works best with lump charcoal for heat and just small sticks or chunks of wood on top for the smoke.
In all fairness, the LSG 24×36 is easy to control with the vent in the door so I don’t use the Fireboard often. I feel like the Fireboard/blower setup is best for smaller charcoal smokers like the Weber Smoky Mountain.

An issue I’ve had with my Smoke is the food probe going bad. I’ve had a couple cooks where they were taking longer than usual to get up to the required temp, and when I checked the meat with my Thermapen it was past the wanted temp. Any suggestions on food probes? Maybe I should toss them after, say, 25 cookings.

Charles, the probes should last a long time, years even. One thing I have discovered over the years is that probes and their braided wires are highly susceptible to water ingress so you have to clean them very carefully. I clean all of my probes by spraying a little cleaner on a paper towel and just wiping it off that way. If there’s any stuck food on it, I use a piece of foil to get that off before cleaning. My original probes on the ThermoWorks Smoke have been going for 7+ years now.
Having said that, you can definitely order new ones from ThermoWorks if you need to.

Jeff, long time paid up guy here. Let me be blunt. The relatively new Combustion Inc digital wireless is the best on the market. No possibility of any challengers. Invented by the guy who brought us Chef Steps and Sous Vide to the masses. One probe has 8 sensors. No insult intended, I pay attention to you. But. I’m startled you’re not up to date on this.
I readily admit that I don’t know everything.. in fact, there’s a lot that I don’t know but I’m a fast learner ;-)

Jim, I have a great relationship with MEATER and they happily pay me small commissions on any sales I send their way. But then, so do most other thermometer companies as well.
The MEATER is one that I have used for a long time but I just don’t get the range on it that I get with the MeatStick. Also the MeatStick has more sensors in the probe which helps it to pull slightly ahead.
In this post I had to list the best thermometer in the “wireless” category and, in my opinion, that is the MeatStick at this time. I will happily update the post if anything changes.

Have you ever gotten a BAD Thermopen instant read thermometer? My MK4 has let me down multiple times now and don’t trust it. I’m shooting for medium rare and getting low readings, but I KNOW the meat must be med-rare or past that based on the firmness and how long it’s been on the grill. I trust my instincts and take it off when the MK4 is still only reading 110 or so. The steak is med-rare or sadly already overdone. I’ve done the ice bath test and that’s fine. I thought about replacing it, because what else could it be? We all hate to just throw money out. Thanks.
Dave, I have all of my original Thermapens including the Classic, the Mk4 and the newer Thermapen ONE and so far I’ve never had an issue (knock on wood). It might be worth your time to contact. ThermoWorks and see if they can help.
Have you tested it in a glass of ice water or in boiling water to see if it’s reading properly there?
I’ve had great luck with ThermoPro…..what is your take on them, have you tested them?
I have most of the ThermoPro thermometers and they do work well. I have had no trouble with them at all.
If I rated the thermometers based on individual categories, the ThermoPro line of thermometers would probably make the list easily.

I find the Meater to be a great wireless thermometer.
It does all the things the Meatstick does but with the ability to have 4 different probes in 4 different meats, a plus. I have never had a problem with this wireless thermometer and the single probe is cheaper than the Meatstick.
I also like the MEATER pretty well but I don’t get very good range with it. Maybe 20 feet at the most.
Other than that I definitely prefer the app on the MEATER.
It is my understanding that you can use up to eight MeatSticks at a time.
