Smoked Ham Recipe - Fabulous Flavor

I have had many requests for a smoked ham recipe and I will attempt to help however allow me to inform you right up front that it is next to impossible to find a raw, uncooked ham unless you just happen to know someone who raises pigs and can get one that way.

I like to cook a raw ham when I can get one and it cooks just like a pork shoulder in fact it is basically the shoulder or picnic and the butt together.

For a raw ham simply apply some yellow mustard onto the ham, sprinkle a cup or so of rub on the ham and massage it into the meat all over the ham making sure to get into every nook and cranny.

A ham, like a pork shoulder or butt has lots of good fat and does its own basting and flavoring as it cooks. Allow about 1.5 hours per pound for smoking the ham and be sure to use some nice strong smoke like hickory or perhaps a mix of oak and apple or your own favorite woods.

Now for those who do not have access to a pig farm or any other way of acquiring a raw ham, you can smoke a pre-cooked ham in the smoker just the same and it will benefit greatly from the smoke.

I like to throw in a pre-cooked ham when I am smoking a turkey for christmas or thanksgiving. It gets some nice smoky flavor and the guests always love it.

You can do the mustard and rub the same way as you normally would only it only needs to smoke for about 4 to 6 hours.

Everyone will be asking for your smoked ham recipe even if you use a pre-cooked one.

I believe everyone who aspires to be a great cook expecially one who cooks outdoors on the smoker should be willing to experiment and to make notes of everything they do. This is how great recipes are born.. this is how great smoked ham recipes are born!

Get a notebook,, write it down and be willing to make adjustments based on your own tastes and on the feedback of your family and guests.
